MAAC basketball tournament 2017: Bracket, schedule, and scores

Monmouth is the top seed and favorite.

The MAAC men’s basketball tournament runs Thursday through Monday in Albany, N.Y. Monmouth is the league’s top overall seed and the favorite to win. Whoever emerges from the MAAC tournament gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, and that team will surely be the only MAAC program to get into the field.

King Rice’s Hawks have had a solid season, cruising through the MAAC without much trouble. They’re a top-100 team by both offensive and defensive efficiency. Senior guard Justin Robinson, who stands just 5’8, has emerged as one of the MAAC’s great players, averaging 20 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds.

After Monmouth, the league gets tighter. Saint Peter’s, Iona, and Canisius are probably the conference’s second tier. The middle of the conference is closely packed, with teams like Canisius, Fairfield, and Rider all boasting similar resumes. Consider the Hawks the favorite to win it all, but if they don’t, it’s hard to say who will.

The format

There are 11 teams in the MAAC. The top five get byes into the quarterfinals, while the bottom six have play-in games in the first round. The No. 4 and 5 seeds are locked into one quarterfinal matchup, while the other three quarters get a team from one of the play-in games. The tournament is single-elimination from start to finish.

The teams

1. Monmouth
2. Saint Peter’s
3. Iona
4. Siena
5. Fairfield
6. Rider
7.
